Create A Comfortable Workstation

If you make the choice to homeschool can be challenging, however helping with homework each night can feel like you’re homeschooling even when you don’t call it homeschool.

After raising 7 children as a single parent homework felt like a death sentence some nights! My kids’ favorite line right at bedtime was, “ I forgot I have homework!”.

I was a homeroom mom at my kid’s school one or two days a week and I noticed one of the teachers had a special table where kids could go to catch up on homework that maybe couldn’t get done at home because of unknown circumstances with the students' home lives.

After I saw the great workspace at the school I decided I needed a designated workstation space at home for my kids to feel comfortable and a reminder to get homework done before 9:00 p.m.

Doing homework and having a social life can be challenging for families to get everything done in a day, however having a space that’s comfortable to study can make a huge difference.

Making a space where your child or student feels comfortable and has the items around them to help them learn can be vital to their wellbeing. Even though I’ve never been homeschooled full time I feel I’ve had enough homework over the years with 7 kids to consider myself a homeschool mom. LOL! Homeschooling is more than books; it's about life skills and learning to get along with others in everyday life, which I’ve taught my kids.

My sister homeschooled all 10 of her children and turned her home into a school room where she planned her homeschool curriculum with other mothers in her neighborhood and each took a subject they were good at and taught their kids (students) about those subjects making sure they were teaching important skills to pass state tests and keeping up with their grade. One thing I noticed in her home is that the students always had a comfortable desk to study and do their schoolwork and turned her home into an actual school room.

Creating a program that worked for everyone involved in their schoolroom helped each family not to get overwhelmed and allowed moms to have other jobs outside the home.

I have admired my sister's work ethic over the years and it seems that each one of her children is wonderfully human and has very close relationships with each of their siblings. I often wonder if the strong bond they have is because of homeschooling.

Having a designated workstation is important because if you are in the wrong position to learn you might doze off or get sleepy. If you are sitting upright while learning it allows your blood to flow through your body more freely allowing oxygen to get to your brain making learning much easier.

Providing comfortable workstations in the office helps promote health. It reduces the risk of eyestrains, headaches, neck pain, back pain, and even nerve pains, such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Repetitive movements can cause these injuries, and seating for long periods can worsen the problem.
